LIVE ON AIR: Today Show Halts Broadcast for Emotional Prayer as Search for Savannah Guthrie’s Mother Enters Critical Phase…
In a moment that left viewers visibly shaken, the Today show paused its live broadcast to do something rarely seen on morning television — pray.
As the desperate search for Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother continues, the studio fell silent as Savannah’s colleagues chose compassion over conversation, faith over format.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, has been missing since January 31, after last being seen at her home in Tucson, Arizona. Nearly three weeks later, there are still no named suspects. A $100,000 reward remains on the table. And for Savannah and her family, the waiting has become unbearable.
A Broadcast Interrupted — By the Heart
On the February 17, 2026 episode of Today, hosts Hoda Kotb, Craig Melvin, and Carson Daly were joined by New York’s newly appointed archbishop, Ronald Hicks.
What began as a routine interview took a powerful turn when the conversation shifted to Savannah — who has been absent from the show since her mother vanished.
“It’s heartbreaking. It’s hard to watch,” Hicks said gently. “I want to extend my absolute support, and especially my prayers — not only my own, but those of an entire community praying for Savannah, her mother, and her family.”
Craig Melvin then asked a question that changed the tone of the broadcast entirely: would Hicks lead them in prayer?
He agreed.
“Let’s Take a Moment…”
As millions watched, the hosts bowed their heads. Hicks’ voice was calm but heavy with emotion.
“Let us place ourselves in the presence of God,” he said, asking for light, mercy, peace, and resolution — and for Savannah to feel the love surrounding her in this darkest moment.
Gift baskets
When the prayer ended, the studio was quiet. The hosts appeared emotional as they thanked Hicks, the weight of the moment unmistakable.
For viewers, it was raw. Unscripted. And deeply human.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2)/Savannah-Guthrie-nancy-guthrie-021526-7d1c8c60256f4ce9ab4d813cdbd29c62.jpg)
A Family Waiting for Answers
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on February 1. Authorities have since confirmed that Savannah, her siblings Annie and Camron, and their spouses have all been ruled out as suspects.
A glove recovered near Nancy’s home contained male DNA, though officials have not confirmed whether it matches the individual seen in home security footage. Alleged ransom notes demanding millions remain unverified.
Still, Savannah and her siblings have continued to plead publicly — asking for proof of life, begging for their mother’s safe return, and stating they are willing to pay.
“Love Will Win”
The Today team has addressed the case before, including an earlier emotional segment featuring psychotherapist Niro Feliciano, who shared wisdom she learned from the parents of Sandy Hook victims.
“Love wins,” Feliciano said. “And love will always win.”
As the investigation enters another uncertain week, that message now echoes far beyond the studio.
Because on live television — with no script, no segment timer, and no easy answers — Today chose to stop everything and simply hope.
And for Savannah Guthrie and her family, millions are still holding their breath.
